We mourn the passing of Hilda Silverman, a steadfast activist working for peace with justice in Israel/Palestine.  Starting with her work in the early 1980s  in
Philadelphia, Washington DC, and then Boston, Hilda used her courageous moral voice grounded in Jewish consciousness to champion the rights of oppressed peoples.  She was a mentor, friend, and colleague to many of us and her loss will be felt for years to come.

In the fall of 1997, a group of Boston-area Jews felt compelled to respond to the breakdown of the Middle East peace process.  Believing that the uncritical support of Israeli policy voiced by established Jewish organizations did not accurately reflect the feelings of many in our community, we organized a peace forum in conjunction with the Boston events celebrating Israel's 50th anniversary.

Presented in collaboration with Israelis, Palestinians, Arab-Americans, and others, the forum was attended by over 200 people.

The group continued to meet, educating itself, and developing programs that could be shared with the greater community.

Visions of Peace with Justice in Israel/Palestine
grew out of this effort.
